Poised
in the blue gulf of the open
sea, Saranda is endowed with
a favourable climate all
year long and a wide variety
of fragrant and colourful
flora that blooms along its
white beaches.
Spread out around a bay, the
city abounds with beautiful
beaches lining crystal clear
water. Such stunning natural
beauty has earned Saranda
the reputation of being the
most popular honeymoon
destination in Albania.
Saranda (also Sarandë)
ancient Onchesmos, is an
attractively situated port
and seaside town. The town
is built back from the
pleasant small beach,
fringed with palm trees.
On
the far side of the bay is
the harbor and the modern
town above the port
facilities. Most tourist
lodgings and eating joints
are in the heart of the
city.
The town has been used by
foreign visitors for many
years.
Saranda is a pleasant place
to stay, with long hours of
sunshine at all times of the
year, very mild winters and
shelter from strong winds
thanks to the surrounding
Eremece mountains.
The sunsets are particularly
famous, when the island of
Corfu seems to float on the
surface of the Ionian Sea.
There is a good swimming off
the rocks 1 kilometer south
of the town.
The town of Saranda is only
a few kilometers from Corfu
across the straits, and the
town has often been linked
with the island in history.
An impressive local
attraction is the Lëkurës
Castle which commands a
great view of Saranda, its
harbor, the island of Corfu
and the Ksamili Islands. |

Butrint (a UNESCO World
Heritage Site)
Near Saranda is Albania’s
largest archaeological site
from the Roman era. There
are interesting remains of
the Roman period in the
small town museum, among the
shops above the front, which
has been built around a
mosaic which was discovered
there. There are also some
exhibits from ancient
Phoinike displayed,
principally a marble statue
of a woman, and a bust of
Artemis, dating from the 2nd
century AD.

The castle of Ali Pasha
Tepelene
It was built in 1807 – 1808,
its purpose was the
prevention of French
occupation, coming from
Corfu and trying to occupy
Butrinti. The castle has the
form of a square of four
stamps
placed in its corners
and a remarkable protection
system, the purpose for the
protection from the sea was
made possible by the two
towers of a width of 2.80 m
and height of 5 m, each of
them having two
communicating doors with the
Vivar’s channel.
Ksamil’s islands
Close to the Ksamil’s town
are situated four islands of
a 9 ha surface, covered of
an evergreen flora with
beautiful beaches in the
whole Riviera. Their exotic
nature is remarkable and the
clear water discovers small
stones. The islands are
frequented during the summer
session from strangers and
local tourists.
The blue eye
It is the greatest fountain
and the most interesting one
from the 18 fountains coming
from the edge of the wide
mountain. It is a natural
monument. Its depth reaches
45 m , situated in the
frontal part of the Krongj
village. Every day it is
visited by a lot of
tourists.
Gjirokaster
The museum city built in the
fifteenth century with
characteristic castles and
houses is an
hour-and-a-half’s drive from
Saranda. |
